Job Summary

The Automation Engineer is responsible for the reliability of the electrical and instrumentation equipment of the plant and for automation and controls systems design, specification, programming, simulation and testing, start-up assistance, and other detailed documentation of PLC & HMI. Must have proven experience in PLC logic programming and HMI systems programming. Automation Engineer must have a solid understanding of computer programming and software development to program processes. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of all employees, visitors, and contractors and promote the culture of Zero4Life. 
  • Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times.
  • Automation Engineer will develop information systems by studying Aggregate operations; designing, developing, and installing software solutions; support, troubleshoot and develop software.
  • The Automation Engineer will be responsible for building new and support of existing PLC and HMI systems.
  • Ability to prioritize well, communicate clearly, have a consistent track record of delivery and excellent software engineering skills. Creative engineering balanced with high quality and a customer focus. 
  • Provides technical and automation support to operations & maintenance.
  • Performs investigation of process deviations and anomalies related to automation hardware and software.
  • Manages implementation of software/hardware changes and upgrades.
  • Manages projects related to design, commissioning, and performance improvement of automated equipment.
  • Continuous communication to operators, operations team, and maintenance/mechanical/electrical to improve process automation.
  • Must be able to work across multiple facets of the project and prioritize multiple responsibilities at the same time.
  • Strong analytic capability and the ability to create innovative solutions.
  • Performs other tasks as directed.
     

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree, Master’s degree a plus
  • 4 – 8 years of experience in aggregate processing/engineering, automation, PLC, and similar knowledge
  • Good working knowledge of aggregate crushing, screening, and processing equipment required.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment with some physical labor at times.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required, bi-lingual in Spanish a plus.
  • Ability to present technical information and data to technical and non-technical audiences in a clear and concise manner with excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Excellent people and organizational skills required.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated team player 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain passport required
     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess experience with PLC, Variable speed drivers for AC and DC motors, Transformers, Motors, Generators, Control Systems, Electrical protection of motor in low, medium and high voltage.
  • Strong PLC and HMI programming skills, PLC (ControlLogix) and HMI
  • Must have proven experience in PLC logic programming & HMI programming
  • Strong knowledge of process control and machine automation
  • Strong knowledge of cement process
  • Working knowledge of engineering documentation required for process equipment
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software
  • Strong communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Capability to work extended hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work with standard office/computer equipment.
  • At times, requires working in hot, dusty, or wet conditions with exposure to loud noises.
  • 50% travel may be required.
     

Physical Requirements

  • Requires walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, climbing, and pulling to a significant degree.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently
  • Involves office and outside field activities, including walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen, in order to communicate to employees/visitors.
