Objective:

 

The Tax Accountant is responsible for ensuring full corporate and indirect tax compliance for entities operating in Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and St. Nevis. The role focuses on preparing and filing tax returns, maintaining accurate tax records, supporting tax audits, and providing technical tax analysis to minimize compliance risk while ensuring adherence to local tax laws and regional reporting requirements.

 

 

Main Responsibilities include:

 

Tax Compliance & Filings

  • Prepare, review, and file corporate income tax returns in Trinidad & Tobago (BIR) and Guyana (GRA).
  • Calculate and file VAT returns (Trinidad & Tobago) and VAT returns (Guyana), ensuring correct treatment of exempt, zero-rated, and taxable supplies.
  • Prepare and request the Tax Compliance Certificate of Income Tax and VAT (Trinidad & Tobago).
  • Prepare and file withholding tax returns related to payments such as interest, dividends, professional fees, management fees, and other reportable payments.
  • Monitor statutory deadlines and ensure timely submission of all tax filings and payments.

 

Tax Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare current tax calculations, tax provisions, and deferred tax computations in accordance with IAS 12 / IFRS.
  • Reconcile tax balances to the general ledger and investigate variances.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes from a tax perspective.
  • Provide tax computations and complete notes for the Financial Statements.

 

Audit & Regulatory Support

  • Act as a liaison with tax authorities in Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana for tax queries, audits, and assessments.
  • Prepare supporting schedules, reconciliations, and documentation required for tax audits and statutory financial audits.
  • Assist with responses to tax assessments, objections, and appeals when required.

 

Tax Advisory & Risk Management

  • Identify tax risks, exposures, and compliance gaps related to corporate and indirect taxes.
  • Support tax planning initiatives within the framework of local tax legislation.
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and assess potential impacts on the business.

 

Transfer Pricing & International Tax

  • Assist in preparing documentation and analyses for related-party transactions.
  • Support reporting and compliance related to cross-border transactions, including service fees, royalties, and other intercompany charges.

 

Documentation & Process Improvement

  • Maintain organized and audit-ready tax files, working papers, and reconciliations.
  • Improve tax processes, compliance trackers, and internal controls.
  • Support implementation of best practices for tax compliance and reporting efficiency

 

 

Required Education / Expertise / Skills:

 

  • Technical or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation
  • Professional certification preferred (ACCA, CPA, CA, or equivalent)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Intermediate – Advanced / reconciliations, schedules, tax trackers)
  • Experience with IFRS and tax accounting (IAS 12)
  • Strong understanding of:
      • Income Tax legislation in Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and St. Nevis
      • VAT laws and compliance requirements
  • Good time management and multitasking skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Professional judgment and confidentiality
  • Experience with Caribbean tax compliance is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of ERP/accounting systems would be an asset
  • Schedule flexibility

 

 

Required Experience:

 

Minimum of 2+ years of tax or accounting experience.
